The History — Kathy Jones and the Birth of a Temple

The story of the Glastonbury Goddess Temple begins in the 1980s, when a community of people — guided by Kathy Jones, writer, Priestess, and spiritual teacher — began gathering in Glastonbury to reimagine and relive the spirituality of the indigenous British Goddess. The intention was not to reconstruct an imagined past, but to bring to life a broken tradition, working from the fragments that Celtic mythology, Arthurian legend, and the sacred landscape of Somerset had preserved across centuries.

In 2003, the Glastonbury Goddess Temple was formally recognised as a place of worship in the United Kingdom — a historic act with few precedents in the modern Western world. From that moment, the Temple has been open daily, maintained by an active priestly community of Priestesses and Priests of the Goddess who rotate in daily service as Melissa.

Kathy Jones developed over time what is known as the Wheel of Avalon — the sacred calendar of eight seasonal festivals, each presided over by a specific archetypal face of the Goddess — and a system of priestly teachings that continues to be transmitted with full continuity today. It is within this lineage that I trained. The work of the Milan International Goddess Temple, of which I am Founder, carries this same transmission into Italy and into the international community of the Avalon tradition.

Inside the Temple — What You Will Find

The interior of the Glastonbury Goddess Temple is intimate and carefully held. The Flame of Avalon is the living heart of the Temple — the uninterrupted presence of the Goddess in the sacred space, the thread of light connecting every visitor, every ceremony, every prayer spoken within those walls to something far older. In the Avalon tradition, tending this flame is a sacred act: the same gesture that Priestesses performed in the Temples of the Goddess thousands of years ago, carried forward without interruption through the hands of the community that holds this space.

There is always at least one Melissa present during opening hours — a community member or Priestess or Priest in service whose role is to tend the space, welcome those who enter, and be available to those who have questions about the tradition. The role of Melissa is not a formal institutional position: it is a genuine service, offered with full presence. Glastonbury Avalon — A Threshold in the Heart of England

Before describing the individual sacred sites, something needs to be said about what Glastonbury Avalon is as a whole — because reducing it to a list of attractions would be a fundamental misunderstanding of what this place is.

Many spiritual traditions regard Glastonbury as the heart chakra of the planet: the point at which the Earth’s energetic network — the ley lines — concentrates with particular intensity. The St Michael’s Ley Line, one of the principal energetic arteries of western Europe, crosses this territory exactly, connecting Glastonbury to St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, the Sacra di San Michele in northern Italy, and continuing east towards Jerusalem.

As the Founder of the Milan International Goddess Temple, I work with both ends of this sacred geography — the Celtic landscape of Glastonbury Avalon and the ancient Goddess sites of northern Italy — and the continuity between them is one of the things that moves me most deeply. For the Avalon tradition specifically, Glastonbury is understood as a portal between the worlds — a place where the veil between the visible and the invisible is thin, where time moves differently, where the inner and outer landscapes converge. Until the twelfth century, Glastonbury was literally an island, surrounded by the marshes of the Somerset Levels. The mythological Isle of Avalon — the place of healing, of the deep feminine mysteries, of the Otherworld — was not only metaphor. It had a physical reality that the landscape still carries, legible to those who come with the right quality of attention.

Glastonbury Sacred Sites:

The Glastonbury Tor

The Tor is the first thing visible on approach to Glastonbury Avalon, and the last thing that leaves you when you go. A conical hill rising 160 metres above the Somerset plain, it dominates the landscape with a presence that is not only geographical. At its summit, the tower of St Michael — all that remains of a fourteenth-century church — stands against the sky with a stillness that words reach for and rarely fully find.

Tor is a Celtic word meaning simply “high hill.” What distinguishes this one from any other is the series of terraced ridges that wind around it — seven levels, which researchers have interpreted as an ancient ritual labyrinth, a processional path that once led pilgrims or initiates in a spiral ascent to the summit. In the Avalon tradition, climbing the Tor is an act of pilgrimage in itself: each spiral turn corresponding to a deeper level of inner work, of integration, of encounter with the Goddess.

The Tor carries deep connections to Gwyn ap Nudd, the figure from Welsh mythology understood as guardian of the Otherworld — lord of the realm of the dead and the unseen, keeper of the threshold between the living and what lies beyond it. At the base of the Tor emerge two sacred springs — one with iron-rich red waters, one with calcium-white waters — two complementary forces, solar and lunar, arising from the same deep source beneath Glastonbury Avalon. Both belong to the landscape of this hill and to any serious pilgrimage of it.

Chalice Well — The Red Waters of Glastonbury

The Chalice Well Gardens are, for many pilgrims, the most immediately accessible heart of Glastonbury Avalon. Something slows on entering — breath, pace, the internal rhythm that usually drives us forward without pause. The iron-rich spring water has coloured the stones of the garden path a deep red-orange for millennia: the colour of blood, of the life force, of the endlessly renewing cycle.

The tradition associates the Chalice Well with the Grail — the sacred cup of Arthurian legend, and behind it a far older current in which the cup or cauldron is the vessel of the Goddess: the container of the waters of life, the womb of the world. The well cover bears the symbol of the vesica piscis — two overlapping circles, an ancient symbol of the intersection between worlds, of the meeting of the feminine and masculine sacred, of the opening between what is visible and what lies beneath.

Drinking this water is a ritual act. Sitting in silence beside the pool, or immersing your hands in the flow, is one of the most direct ways to feel Glastonbury Avalon in the body rather than merely in the mind. This is a place that works through the senses, not through the intellect.

The White Spring

Directly across the road from the Chalice Well entrance stands a Victorian stone building that gives nothing away from the outside. Inside: darkness, the sound of water moving over candlelit rock, altars to the Goddess and the God, the smell of beeswax and damp stone.

The White Spring is managed by community volunteers as a sacred space open to all. Its waters — white, calcium-rich, iron-free — are the counterpart to the Chalice Well: where those waters are red and solar, these are pale and lunar. Together, the two springs hold the full polarity of the Glastonbury landscape — two streams arising from the same depths, flowing in complementary directions.

The White Spring is not a visitor attraction. You enter in silence. You sit. You listen. Ritual bathing in its waters is part of the spiritual practice of many who come to Glastonbury Avalon. If there is one place where I consistently feel time stop — as a physical sensation, not a poetic description — this is it. Do not miss it.

Glastonbury Abbey

The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey occupy a large and profoundly atmospheric site in the town centre. What stands today — magnificent even in ruin, golden stone against the Somerset sky — represents only a fraction of what was once the wealthiest and most influential monastery in medieval England.

According to tradition, Joseph of Arimathea brought Christianity to Britain through Glastonbury, establishing the first Christian church here centuries before the Roman mission of Augustine. The Glastonbury Thorn — a hawthorn said to flower at Christmas as well as in spring — is associated with this founding legend. Hawthorn, notably, is one of the most sacred trees in the Celtic tradition, appearing also in the founding mythology of ancient Milan: the same tree, the same threshold quality, across two sacred geographies I know intimately.

The Abbey is also the claimed burial site of King Arthur and Guinevere, whose remains were reportedly discovered here in the twelfth century. Whether or not one accepts this claim historically, what matters is that Glastonbury Avalon has been understood for over a thousand years as the earthly resting place of the most significant mythological king of Britain — and of his queen. The Lady Chapel, built on the site of the oldest Saxon church, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary: another moment in the long continuity of feminine sacred presence at the heart of this landscape.

Goddess spirituality is a broad and diverse field of spiritual practice centred on the recognition that the divine has a feminine face — and that this face has been largely, though never entirely, erased from the mainstream spiritual traditions of the Western world.

At its heart, Goddess spirituality affirms the sacred nature of the Earth, of the body, of the cycles of nature, and of life itself in all its forms. The Goddess — understood not as a distant, transcendent deity but as an immanent presence woven through the living world — is the central figure of devotion and encounter. She is present in the turning of the seasons, in the phases of the Moon, in the waters, in the land, and in the depths of the human psyche.

Goddess spirituality draws on a wide range of cultural and historical sources: the pre-Christian traditions of Europe, the ancient Near East, the Mediterranean world, and the mythological heritage of many cultures in which female divine figures held central roles. It is not a reconstructed ancient religion, nor a fixed dogma. It is a living tradition, evolving and adapting while remaining rooted in principles that are genuinely ancient.

Ancient Roots

The veneration of a female divine principle is among the oldest documented forms of human spiritual expression. Archaeological finds from Palaeolithic and Neolithic Europe — figurines, cave paintings, ritual objects — suggest widespread cultures of reverence for a feminine sacred, long predating the religious systems that came to dominate the Western world.

Researchers such as Marija Gimbutas spent decades documenting the symbolic language of these early European cultures, identifying a coherent cosmology centred on cycles of birth, death, and regeneration — embodied in the figure of the Goddess. In the ancient world, the divine feminine was present everywhere: in Isis and Hathor in Egypt, in Inanna and Ishtar in Mesopotamia, in Demeter and Persephone in Greece, in Brigid and the Morrígan in the Celtic world, in Freyja and the dísir of the Norse tradition.

The suppression of these traditions was gradual, complex, and never complete. Traces of the Goddess survived in folk practice, in the landscape, in the names of sacred sites, in the figures of saints who absorbed the qualities of far older divine women. Goddess spirituality, in the contemporary world, draws on all of this — with scholarly rigour, with mythological imagination, and with genuine spiritual practice.

Goddess Spirituality and the Avalon Tradition

Within the wider landscape of Goddess spirituality, the Avalon tradition is one of the most structured and most clearly lineaged paths available in the contemporary Western world.

Rooted in the mythological and spiritual heritage of the British Isles, and transmitted through the Glastonbury Goddess Temple — the first legally recognised Goddess Temple in the Western world — the Avalon tradition centres on the island of Avalon as a living inner landscape of transformation and initiation.

The tradition works with the Wheel of the Year: eight seasonal festivals, each presided over by a different face of the Goddess, each inviting a specific quality of inner work and outer celebration. It is initiatory in nature — meaning that the relationship with the Goddess deepens progressively through repeated engagement with the cycle, year after year. Each turn of the Wheel reveals new layers.

The Milan International Goddess Temple is rooted in this tradition. As a Priestess of Avalon trained and dedicated at the Glastonbury Goddess Temple, I carry this lineage into my work in Italy and internationally — through ceremony, through guidance, through pilgrimage, and through the sacred space of the Temple itself.

How Goddess Spirituality Differs from Wicca and New Age

These distinctions matter, because they are frequently confused — and the confusion can lead seekers toward practices that do not fully answer what they are looking for.

Wicca is a specific modern religion, developed in the twentieth century, with its own theology, ritual structure, and initiatory system. It honours both a Goddess and a God, works with the cycles of nature, and draws on a range of esoteric sources. Goddess spirituality and Wicca share some common ground — particularly the reverence for nature and the feminine divine — but Goddess spirituality as a field is considerably broader, older in its cultural references, and not bound to Wicca’s specific theological framework.

The New Age is a cultural phenomenon rather than a coherent spiritual tradition: a wide, eclectic marketplace of practices, beliefs, and tools drawn from many different sources, often without the depth of lineage or the rigour of genuine spiritual training. Goddess spirituality at its most authentic is rooted in specific traditions, in genuine study, in community and accountability — qualities that distinguish it from the more individualised, commodity-oriented expressions of spiritual seeking that the New Age tends to produce.

This does not mean that crystals, oracle cards, or personal intuition have no place in a spiritual life. They do. The distinction lies in whether they are accompanied by something deeper — a real relationship with a living tradition, a real community of practice, a real encounter with the Goddess as a presence rather than a concept.

What Goddess Spirituality Looks Like in Practice

Goddess spirituality is not a philosophy to be understood — it is a way of life to be lived. The difference between reading about it and practising it is significant.

In practice, Goddess spirituality involves attuning to the cycles of nature and of the Moon — developing a conscious relationship with the rhythms of the year and of one’s own inner life. It involves ritual and ceremony: marking the turning of the seasons, honouring the Goddess in her many faces, creating sacred space in which something other than ordinary consciousness can speak. It involves community — gathering with others who share the path, holding space together, celebrating and grieving together across the thresholds of the year. And it involves inner work: the honest, sometimes uncomfortable process of meeting oneself in the presence of the Goddess, whose most fundamental quality is truth.

At the Milan International Goddess Temple, Goddess spirituality is lived through the seasonal celebrations of the Wheel of the Year, through women’s circles in Milan and online, through bespoke one-to-one spiritual guidance, and through sacred pilgrimages to the ancient sites of Milan and Glastonbury Avalon.
